"Big Daddy" Don Garlits set a track record at Oxford Plains Dragway in 1977 of 180.74mph. This held strong until 1997 when Donny Johnson of North Waterboro, Maine ran a 3.88 at 191mph and not only did he do it once, he did it twice in the same night!!

We are so proud of our local dragway, known as Maine's Premier 1/8 Mile Dragstrip and we are just as proud to have our speed record held by a Maine resident, Donny Johnson. Donny contacted OPD to let us know about his record and we truly appreciate his history and experience both at Oxford Plains Dragway and in drag racing.

Donny has been racing for 30+ years, starting out sand dragging and even bringing his sand car to Oxford Plains Dragway (aka Oxford Dragway). The run was good but not safe and his history and experience with dragsters began. Donny bought, ran, sold, bought, altered, ran, etc different cars, improving his motors, his times and his experience. Donny has run at both Epping and Oxford throughout his career and his addiction and love for drag racing has only increased. He has told us that he has had so many people, family and friends helping him throughout his 30 years, including the Huff Family, the Curits, P&P Machine, Jerry Porter and his former wife Nancy. Donny now tunes the Sexton Racing cars for them and he says the rest is history.
