OXFORD ACCELERATION SERIES

Douglass, Black win wet Unicel Enduros

OXFORD, Maine – Rain ravaged another race program at Oxford Plains Speedway on Friday night. This time, though, it wasn't the end of the world or the end of the evening.

Since reviving Enduro racing as part of Unicel Motor Mayhem last season, track officials have used fire hoses to soak the racing surface in strategic places to slow down the 4, 6 and 8-cylinder cars.

Once the worst of the deluge passed, the asphalt was in perfect shape for the wettest, weirdest show seen in some time at the historic oval. Truck tires also provided an obstacle course for the combined 38 cars in two racing divisions.

Friday turned out to be old-home night, as well, with two charter members of the Oxford Acceleration Series returning to their old haunt and walking away with the 50-lap victories.

Jason Black dominated the second half of the Full-Size event. A past feature winner in Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebel and Chimney Tech Outlaw competition, Black picked up his first OPS checkered flag since 2001.

Turnover at the technical inspection shack made a winner of Skip Douglass Jr, in the Compact half of the twin bill.

Douglass completed only 48 of the scheduled 50 laps, but he was the last man standing when Kyle Hewins and Jimmy Childs were knocked from first and second, respectively, due to tire infractions.

The second-leading winner in Outlaw division history, Douglass was the Acceleration champion in 2001 and last won previously in 2004.

One of the toughest customers in the here and now, David Childs, registered his division-leading fifth win of the summer in a 20-lap Chimney Tech Outlaw special.

Longtime Spectator Drags rivals Bruce Berry and Lyman McKeage made contact in their semifinal clash, with McKeage spinning out of the contention as Berry sped on the finish.

Berry then swept Paul Fouquette in the best-of-three championship round.

Rain shortened the popular Smoky Donut Show to one round, but Jim Pineo didn't need a callback to establish himself as the clear winner in his 1972 Monte Carlo. Doug Dixon completed a New Hampshire sweep of the top two spots.

Black, who started last in his 23-car field, swapped the lead three times with early pacesetter Nick Hanson. He finally took command with an inside pass on lap 21.

Hanson soldiered on to the runner-up spot, the only other driver to complete the 50-lap route. Past winner Ryan Chadwick was third, followed by Oxford Networks Late Model regular Gerald Parlin and Jason Cyr.

Douglass drove a steady race in a Compact encounter dominated on the surface by Charlie Webster and Hewins.

Webster surrendered the lead to Hewins on lap 34, then spun to a stop in the first turn seven circuits later.

The only other driver to officially lead the race, Corey Williams, wound up second in the shuffled rundown. Nathan Guptill advanced to third, backed by Mikel Tabor and Douglas Wilson.

Childs charged from 12th to first in nine laps, helped by two early caution periods and a lap 8 restart in the Outlaw sprint.

Tech issues also shuffled that top five, with Keith Landry and Caesar Morgan dropping from second and fifth, respectively. Following Childs in the official order were Gerry Richard, who led the first eight circuits, Zach Bowie, Steve Brill and Tina Titus.

OPS roars back to life Saturday night with the New England Dodge Dealers Summer Celebration, featuring six divisions of racing and a gigantic fireworks display. Action kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

The next Unicel Motor Mayhem is Friday, August 29.
