OXFORD
ACCELERATION SERIES
May 2, 2007
Happy returns for Davis, Dufault,
Heath
in nine-feature Acceleration opener
OXFORD, Maine – There’s no rust on Jim Davis Jr., Jamie Heath or
Matt Dufault.
Each of those drivers took a two-year
break from the Oxford Plains Speedway Acceleration Series for a
variety of reasons. All three celebrated their return Wednesday
night with a 20-lap victory in the 2007 season-opener.
Davis, who won three races as a
Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Strictly Stock rookie in 2005 and
dabbled with a Pro Stock ride in ’06, delivered his ninth career
victory in the Chimney Tech Outlaw class. The 2003 speedway champion
took the lead from David Childs on a lap 9 restart and held him off
to capture the first of three Outlaw encounters.
Last seen winning an Outlaw feature in
2004, Dufault drove past Scott Farrington on lap 9 and cruised to a
win in the MacDonald Motors Runnin’ Rebel opener.
Heath etched his name in the history
book as the first driver to win a feature in the new six-cylinder
Crazy Horse Racing Engines Renegade division. It marks his fifth OPS
Acceleration Series triumph in three different divisions.
Thom Bell and Jim Drake joined Davis as
Outlaw victors. Nic Stanley and defending division champion Derek
Cairns followed Dufault into the Rebel winner’s circle. Jake Burns
(Call of the Wild Sport Truck) and Vanna Brackett (Allen’ s Coffee
Flavored Brandy Ladies) also prevailed on a chilly, cloudless night
at the track.
With three cautions slowing the field in
the first Outlaw scramble, Davis casually clawed his way from his
eighth starting spot to the outside of the front row for the third
resumption.
Childs’ lead machine appeared to have
trouble finding high gear for a moment, and that gave Davis the
space he needed to claim his ninth career Outlaw checkered flag.
That’s tied for fifth on the all-time list.
“I’m not sure I’m going to be here
every week,” said Davis, “but this is a great way to start the
year.”
Childs, a five-time winner in Rebel
competition last season, settled for second. Jerry Freve edged Fred
Clavet for third, with Wal-Mart Rookie of the Year Leo Hatch-Auger
using a backup car to finish a solid fifth in his Outlaw
debut.
Bell drew the pole position for the
middle Outlaw chapter and dominated the caution-free sprint. Mike
Ballard surged from 10th to second but ran out of time to reel in
Bell, who eased to his third OPS victory.
Keith Landry claimed third, with Stan
Morgan fighting off several door-to-door challenges for a
hard-fought fourth in front of Scott Ellis.
Drake ran a relatively close second
throughout the Outlaw nightcap, putting him in position for his
second career conquest when apparent winner Richard Spaulding’s
car failed the post-race inspection. That elevated John Patria to
second, an extra reward for a daring move between cars that jumped
him from fifth to third late in the race.
Addison Bowie took third, while Gerald
Parlin rebounded from last in the 18-car starting grid to shake
Steve Moon for fourth.
Dufault dealt with one restart after his
pass for the lead, but he pulled away and left Farrington to fend
off Randy Nutter for second.
“I really didn’t expect to be here
the first time out with this car,” Dufault said.
Another comeback driver, Jeff Hebert,
charged to fourth, just ahead of 2006 Wal-Mart Rookie of the Year
Nathan Guptill.
Stanley took command from the outside of
the front row and led wire-to-wire. It was the second Oxford victory
for the second-generation driver, who was one of five Rebel rookies
to win a feature last summer.
Brandon Munroe reeled in the leader as
Stanley took the white flag, but Munroe’s car fell off the pace in
the first turn. Stanley proceeded to a six-second victory over Jamie
Leavitt, Doug Degroat, rookie Josh Childs and Mark Childs Jr.
Cairns opened defense of his track
championship with authority. He dashed from third to first on the
opening lap, making the winning pass to the low side of Kevin Noyes
at the completion of the opening circuit.
“I had to start off the way I
finished,” said Cairns, who left behind an intense battle for
second.
Troy Jordan came out on top in that
scrap with Noyes and Kyle Hewins. Cole Flagg completed the top
five.
Burns blazed past Marvin Hamilton in a
drag race to the finish line to cap an exciting Truck tangle.
Hamilton took his lead on lap 12 with a three-wide, inside pass of
Burns and early leader Degroat.
“I didn’t think it was going to
happen,” Burns said. “I guess I got a little break at the
end.”
Kevin Oliver and Yogi Hiscock shuffled
ahead of Degroat on the final lap to nail down third and fourth,
respectively.
Brackett led the final 17 laps of the
Ladies event with early leader Deanna Bisbee in close proximity. It
was the seventh OPS win for Brackett, who fell four points shy of
Bisbee’s mom, Debbie Martin, for the 2006 track title.
Cathy Manchester fought off Debbie
Marston and John Patria for third.
Heath held the point through the entire,
10-lap Renegade route with John Childs and Ken Marston in tow.
“I hope we get 20, 30, even 100
cars,” Heath said. “This is a great class.”
The Chimney Tech Outlaws will be the
first Acceleration Series division to share the spotlight with the
Oxford Championship Series this Saturday night. They’ll be part of
Sunoco Race Fuels Night, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Acceleration Series competition resumes
next Wednesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. While the Outlaws have a
“bye” week, all other divisions will compete in extended, 30-lap
features.
