ACCELERATION SERIES
June 13, 2007
The kids are alright:
16-year-olds
Ryan Philbrick, Josh Childs rule Rebels
OXFORD, Maine – Ryan Philbrick became the first driver born in the
1990s to win an oval track feature at Oxford Plains Speedway. He
earned that distinction Wednesday night by, oh, about 20
minutes.
Josh Childs also made the triumphant
left turn into victory lane as the two 16-year-old drivers
book-ended Macdonald Motors Runnin’ Rebel feature action.
In the middle 20-lap stanza, Gregg
Norton moved into a tie for the all-time lead in Runnin' Rebel
feature wins in the Acceleration Series with his 15th career
four-cylinder triumph.
Lengthy victory droughts went by the
wayside in Chimney Tech Outlaw competition. Josh Paradis drove an
untested backup car to his first Outlaw win since 2001. Bruce
Robertson stopped a winless skein of nearly three full years with a
score in the second Outlaw encounter. By contrast, Ron Abbott Jr.
provided a familiar face in the finale, taking his first checkers
since 2005.
In the first of two Call of the Wild
RV Center Sport Truck features, Lee Spurling turned around his
rotten luck with a victory.
Repeaters also made their presence
known. Jake Burns (Sport Truck #2) and Vanna Brackett (Allen's
Coffee Flavored Brandy Ladies) each prevailed for the third time
this season. Jamie Heath (Crazy Horse Racing Engines Renegade)
cruised to his fifth first-place trophy.
Childs captured the third and final
Runnin' Rebel dash for his first OPS triumph, and that wasn't the
only bit of history for the local teenager. Childs became the 12th
different member of his extended family to win at Oxford, and his
victory is the 150th for that clan.
“It feels good to finally get
here,” Childs said. “We’ve been close a couple of
times.”
Jeff Hebert tried to spoil the party.
After surrendering the lead to Childs on lap 1, Hebert stayed in the
rookie’s tire tracks until the conclusion, falling just shy of his
second straight win.
Kyle Hewins continued the youth
movement with a third-place run ahead of Scott Farrington and Mark
Childs Jr., cousin of the winner.
Philbrick spent a portion of Tuesday
afternoon testing his silver #06 at OPS after a rough start to his
inaugural campaign. The practice paid immediate dividends for
Philbrick, who reeled in Craig Farrington and overtook the veteran
with under four laps remaining in a caution-free charge to the
front.
“It felt really good compared to
the way it was going,” Philbrick said. “We finally got it
right.”
Bill Dunphy held off James Wood for
third. Rookie Bill Grover grabbed fifth.
Since an opening night mechanical
failure, Norton has finished first, second and first in his last
three starts. Norton dashed from fifth to first along the rail on
the opening lap and tied current Oxford Networks Late Model driver
Gary Chiasson in the all-time Rebel roundup.
“This is nice. We’ve had problems
with the motor, the handling and the fuel pump,” Norton said,
“but I think we’ve got it all figured out.”
Doug Degroat finished a distant
second for his second trophy run of the night after a third-place
showing in the Sport Truck finale.
Jason Hannigan was disqualified
following the post-race inspection, elevating Martin Krauter to
third, his best finish in the Rebel ranks. Patrick Elsman and Mike
Ward shuffled ahead to fourth and fifth, respectively.
One week after badly wrecking his
primary ride on the final lap, Paradis pulled another car out of
storage, taped his #82 on the side and never missed a beat.
Rick Vining led the first 10 laps of
a flag-to-flag run before Paradis drove around him and ended his
six-year absence from the winner’s circle.
“We had a lot of time invested in
the other car, but this one seemed to do OK,” Paradis said.
Starting position was no object in
the Outlaw opener. Paradis took the green flag in 10th. Jim Drake
dashed from 15th to second. Scott Ellis steered from 17th to third.
Vining enjoyed his best run of a rough season to date in fourth,
while Dillon Coburn claimed fifth in only his third start of the
year.
Robertson was the beneficiary of
Gerald Parlin’s failure to pass tech, but he didn’t back into
the race two victory. Robertson led the first 18 laps before
yielding to Parlin. That verdict was later reversed due to an
illegal camshaft, vaulting Robertson to the win ahead of Jerry Freve.
Tom Averill’s car also lost out at
the “house of horrors,” handing the third-place trophy to Bubba
Collins. Gordon Bell narrowly missed an early big wreck by Gerry
Richard and Jeremy Leavitt and survived for fourth. Dennis Morang
was fifth.
Abbott was the fourth and final
leader of a typically loaded and competitive Outlaw main event. He
used the inside lane to dispatch Steve Brill with two laps to go
before holding off the red-hot Richard Spaulding, denying him a
third straight victory.
“That was crazy,” said Abbott,
who weathered an anxious moment on lap 7 when early leader Mike
Rainville spun in front of the field after a shove from behind. “I
had to go below the curb to miss the 122 (Rainville). Passing guys
in this division just gets tougher and tougher. I’m glad this race
was only 20 laps.”
Brill joined the disqualification
list after inspection, advancing Thom Bell to third, Steve Moon to
fourth and Mark MacDonald to fifth.
Burns tracked down Rick Hebert over
the second half of the high-point truck tangle. With Hebert pinned
behind the slower trucks of Joe and Brian Farrar, Burns went to the
outside just after the two-to-go signal and moved to the top of the
leader board.
“I put two new tires on it this
week,” Burns said. “That probably helped.” He would have been
the winner anyway in light of Hebert’s DQ.
Yogi Hiscock moved up to a
season-best second, leading Degroat across the line. Corey Williams
and Marvin Hamilton dueled side-by-side for fourth over the final 10
circuits, with Williams claiming the spot.
Spurling was an exultant winner after
a sluggish start to his season. The unofficial winning pass of Opie
Allard came up lap 17, although Allard also was stripped of his
finish after the tech once-over.
“I can’t believe it stayed
together,” Spurling said. “It was a lot of work. (Allard) made a
little mistake in traffic, and I was able to take advantage of
it.”
Rene Foster’s first Wednesday
appearance of the season yielded a runner-up result. Gale Williams
took third for his first trophy in recent memory. Devon Smith rode a
career-best fourth. Ditto for Geoff Griffiths, who was fifth.
Three caution stoppages on laps 2, 4
and 6 gave the Ladies point leaders numerous chances to catch up
with early leader Christina Spaulding. Brackett used that close
range to make the inside move in turn three on lap 13 and fashion
her ninth career victory.
“I think everyone must have been
anxious because there were only 20 laps instead of 30,” Brackett
said. “That’s the most cautions I’ve seen in a Ladies race in
a long time. It made for a good race and a good show for the
fans.”
Dottie Patria finished second to take
over the same position behind Brackett in the championship point
standings. Spaulding held on for third, with Cathy Manchester and
Debbie Marston at a safe distance.
Heath swapped the lead with Gerard
Cote and Ken Marston early in the 10-lap Renegade sprint before
keeping the advantage to himself from lap 5 to the finish.
“I was kind of playing around with
Ken, and then I had to say to myself, ‘ What am I doing?’ He’s
getting faster ever week,” Heath said.
Marston and Cote were second and
third for the second straight week. John Childs gained speed late in
the event but settled for fourth, with Skip Turner fifth in his
first ride of the season.
Oxford's Acceleration Series resumes
next Wednesday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m., although the Ladies and Trucks
will be in action this Saturday, June 17. That's a tremendously busy
night for the Championship Series, featuring double Oxford Networks
Late Model main events, a 100-lap Allen's Strictly Stock showcase,
an Allen's Mini feature and appearances by the Senior Tour Auto
Racers and Atlantic Coast Old Timers. Racing starts at 6:30 p.m.
