ACCELERATION SERIES
June 20, 2007
Rainville makes the long haul;
Pelotte, Munroe join him as first-time winners
OXFORD, Maine – First-time winners aren't uncommon in the
Acceleration Series at Oxford Plains Speedway. Three in about an hour created quite a stir Wednesday night, however.
First and unquestionably hauling
farthest was Mike Rainville, who commutes every week from Littleton,
N.H. The Enduro racing veteran and OPS rookie picked up his
breakthrough win in the second of three Chimney Tech Outlaw 30-lap
feature events.
Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebel action
produced the second and third first-time conquerors, with Robby
Pelotte prevailing in only his second OPS start and Brandon Munroe
winning the very next event in a wild one.
In other feature action, Jim Archer
delivered his second Chimney Tech Outlaw win in three weeks, while
Keith Landry ended a four-year winless streak in the high-point
finale.
James Wood also collected his first
checkered flag since 2003 in the Runnin' Rebel opener, an event that
was rained out on May 30. Bill Dunphy ran second in that race and
was also runner-up in Munroe's victory.
Mark Childs Jr. captured his third
Rebel feature of the season in the nightcap.
Jamie Heath led the Crazy Horse
Racing Engines Renegades for the sixth time in seven tries.
Rainville wasn't even sure his car
would be ready for this week's road trip after a hard wreck while
battling for the lead in the high-point feature one week ago.
It didn't take him long to
demonstrate that everything was back in its proper place. Starting
fifth, Rainville needed only seven laps to reel in early leader
Ralph Felker and Maurice Martel Jr. to take command.
The lone caution flag of the event
appeared with four laps remaining and appeared to put Rainville's
win in jeopardy, with Jim Drake Jr. situated to the leader's outside
for the restart. Rainville re-established his advantage, however,
and cruised across the stripe.
Rainville would have emerged the
winner either way, as Drake's ride failed the post-race inspection.
"I love coming here to
race," said Rainville, "and I'm the happiest guy in Maine
right now."
Kevin Leighton moved up in the
running order to claim his second runner-up finish of the campaign,
beating Bubba Collins by inches for that position. Randy Robitaille
and Tom Averill completed the top five.
Munroe's triumph was the strangest of
the evening. Although the second Rebel clash ran caution-free, it
was the race seemingly nobody wanted to win, and few laps unfolded
without a spin.
The last and most fateful momentum
swing went Munroe's way on lap 25, when Martin Krauter and Bill
Dunphy tangled while dicing it out for the lead.
Several seconds off the pace prior to
that encounter, Munroe became the runaway winner when Krauter was
assessed a stop-and-go penalty for his role in the incident.
"I did not expect to be here at
all," Munroe said. "All of I sudden I looked up at the
scoreboard and it said I was leading."
Dunphy had enough cushion over the
pack to recover from his spin and run second, followed by Brian
Hawthorne, Brady Romano and Charlie Webster.
Pelotte needed only three laps after
an early caution to wheel around Mike Winslow and pedal to an
impressive victory in the first regularly scheduled Rebel scramble.
"I've raced before, but never
here until last week," Pelotte said. "It's a nice place.
It was fun racing those guys."
Winslow outran Craig Farrington for
second. Calvin Rose Jr. was an eye-opening fourth in only the second
start of his OPS career. Bill Grover claimed fifth.
Childs emerged as the fourth and
final leader of the Rebel finale on lap 13, taking advantage of Kyle
Hewins' drift to the high groove after a lap 8 restart.
Hewins stayed in Childs' tire tracks
until hitting the turn two curb with two laps remaining and backing
off to protect the runner-up spot.
"My car wasn't handling very
well tonight," Childs said. "I just caught a couple of
breaks."
Josh Childs backed up last week's
breakthrough win with a third-place run ahead of Matt Dufault and
Tyson Jordan. Roughly half the field was involved in two early
wrecks on laps 6 and 8.
Wood took advantage of Dunphy's
wobble on lap 17 to take control of the Rebel make-up event. Wood
briefly lost traction himself on the next circuit before
straightening the wheel and accelerating to an impressive win.
"I thought maybe he got into me
a little bit, but it was a good, clean race. Bill helps me out a
lot," Wood said.
Patrick Elsman, Zach Audet and Grover
completed the top five and were the only remaining cars on the lead
lap.
Archer was peerless in the first
Outlaw race, leading the final 25 laps after Scott Veinott and Fred
Clavet set the early pace. He has now doubled his previous career
win total in the space of 14 days.
Kevin Plummer and Dillon Coburn
continued their recent climb in the standings in second and third,
trailed by rookies Clavet and Allen.
Landry led every lap of the
high-point Outlaw encounter, withstanding the late charge of red-hot
Richard Spaulding and a flurry of three late restarts to do so.
Virtually everyone else in the field
was involved in at least one skirmish in an unusually wild race for
the point leaders. Jerry Freve, Joe Geroux and John Patria led the
pack of survivors.
Heath handled a season-high field of
six in the upstart Renegade ranks. John Childs rebounded from recent
motor woes in second, with Gerard Cote, Skip Turner and Ken Marston
in tow.
OPS turns up the speed again this
Saturday, June 23, with 99.9 The Wolf Fan Appreciation Night. In
addition to more than 300 green-flag laps of racing and hundreds of
dollars in giveaways, there will be a pre-race, on-track autograph
session. Adult admission for the night is only $5, with all students
12 and under admitted free.
