ACCELERATION SERIES
July 11, 2007
Perley Childs' presence felt
again: Son David, grandsons Mark and Josh all win
OXFORD, Maine – One week after losing the patriarch of their
racing family, David and Josh Childs and Mark Childs Jr. reminded
everyone that the name and the tradition are alive and well at
Oxford Plains Speedway.
In his first race since father Perley
passed away, David Childs captured the Chimney Tech Outlaw finale in
the Oxford Acceleration Series on Wednesday night.
Josh and Mark Jr., both grandsons of
Perley Childs, captured Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebel feature
victories.
Eleven different drivers went to
victory lane on a card that included all five Acceleration divisions
and a pair of make-up races from recent rainouts.
Brian Nason, a student at Maine
Maritime Academy, scored his first career feature victory in his
first start of the season. Troy Jordan also ended a season-long
victory drought in the four cylinder ranks.
The theme of first-time winners
carried over into Outlaw, where Leo Hatch-Auger and Dan Brown both
held the first checkered flag of their rookie campaigns. Mike
Ballard was a winner in the held-over Outlaw main.
Doug Degroat held off Call of the
Wild RV Sport Truck dominator Jake Burns for his first victory of
the season. Patty Brannon went wire-to-wire for her second Allen's
Coffee Flavored Brandy Ladies score of the summer. In Crazy Horse
Racing Engines Renegade action, Jamie Heath prevailed for the ninth
time.
Initially, David Childs finished
second to another member of the family - his uncle, Guy. The driver
of the #00 dominated his race for the second week in a row, but this
time he failed to make the cut at the tech shack during the
post-race inspection.
Prior to that verdict, however, Guy
spoke volumes about his older brother in victory lane.
"This is another win for
him," Guy Childs said. "If everything goes according to
God's will, I'm going to win a lot more races for him. I never would
have driven a race car at all if not for him. I wish he were here
tonight so I could tell him I proud I am of him."
David Childs inherited his first
victory in the Outlaw division after numerous four-cylinder wins on
Wednesday and Saturday nights in the past. His win also helped
preserve a share of bragging rights in the household, since son Josh
won his second race of the season about three hours earlier.
Childs took second spot (and
essentially the win) away from Jerry Freve on lap 17. Prior to that,
Mike Rainville and Steve Moon staged a brilliant battle for the
point until Rainville drove a smidge too hot into the first turn on
lap 12, causing both leaders to spin.
Tom Averill scooted into the
temporary lead, but he was black-flagged for passing below the
inside curb. Guy Childs left the field in his exhaust fumes from
that point until the tide turned in tech.
Freve advanced to second in the final
rundown, followed by Bubba Collins, Ron Abbott Jr. and Steve
Moon.
Brown and Hatch-Auger became the
second and third newcomers to win an Outlaw feature this
season.
Hatch-Auger tracked down fellow
first-year Outlaw competitor Todd Foss with three laps remaining in
their 20-lap battle. He narrowly avoided disaster just after the
initial green flag when Ed Burlock, Dillon Coburn and Robert Lowe
stacked up in the first turn.
“The start was a little crazy,”
Hatch-Auger said, “but we got out of it.”
Foss failed the post-race technical
inspection, vaulting Jay Wilkins to a season-best second. Craig
Coolidge charged from 20th to third in his first start of the
summer, followed by Gerry Richard and Scott Veinott.
Brown has found his comfort zone in
the Outlaw class. The rookie chased Ralph Felker for 13 laps before
powering into the lead and scampering away.
“This is awesome,” Brown said.
“It’s been a tough year.”
Felker’s runner-up showing was his
best since a Mini Stock victory in 2004. John Spencer’s post-race
disqualification hoisted Kevin Plummer to third, Josh Paradis to
fourth and Thom Bell to fifth.
One of Ballard’s patented charges
in the middle and extreme outside lanes paved his path to the
make-up win, his first after three runner-up finishes in the
spring.
Ballard’s 17th career victory tied
Skip Douglass Jr. for second on the all-time Outlaw list, two behind
“Bullet” Bob Washburn.
“I just stayed out of the way of
the other guys,” Ballard said. “Two weeks in a row they got
me.”
Josh Childs was fortunate that the
held-over Rebel event was only 30 laps and not 31. It’s also good
that he was more than a straightaway in front when a telltale plume
of smoke coughed from the rear of his car in the next-to-last
corner.
“It just blew up,” Childs said.
“I think my grandfather must have been watching out for me
there.”
Childs led from green-to-checkered
from the pole. Scott Farrington stayed in front of Jim Hart in the
battle for second. Mark Childs Jr. foreshadowed his late-evening win
with a charge to fourth, just ahead of point leader Matt Dufault.
Mark Childs Jr. caught and passed
Kyle Hewins with four circuits remaining in the 20-lap nightcap.
Dufault’s consistent campaign continued with a third-place trophy.
Tyson Jordan rallied from mechanical woes in his opening event to
run fourth, with Jeff Hebert in tow.
Nason exploded from the inside of the
back row to take the lead from Charlie Webster on lap 14 of the
first originally scheduled Rebel scrap.
“I’ve been waiting a long time
this one,” said Nason, who has missed much of the season on a
school assignment at sea.
Foss was a close second, and his
four-cylinder passed the tech check to ensure his best OPS finish.
Webster, Gerard Cote and Nathan Guptill filled out the paying
positions.
Troy Jordan surrendered the lead to
Degroat before reclaiming it with three laps to go and denying
Degroat the Truck/Rebel sweep. Hart also maneuvered past Degroat to
claim second, with Bill Dunphy and James Wood completing the top
five.
All was not lost for Degroat, who
survived Jake Burns’ last-lap bid for his seventh victory of the
season and chalked up his first in the process.
“If that race was 30 laps, I know I
would have been in trouble,” Degroat said.
Burns protected most of his point
lead with a second-place effort. Marvin Hamilton held Lee Spurling
and Rene Foster at bay for third.
Brannon bolted to a one-sided Ladies
victory in Thom Bell’s #18. Equally impressive was Kimberly
Sessions, who kept her distance from point leader Vanna Brackett and
wound up a best-ever second. Dottie Patria and Deanna Bisbee chased
Brackett across the line.
Heath didn’t even give his Renegade
rivals a ray of hope, putting the hammer down from last to first on
lap 1 in the 10-lap scramble for stock six-cylinders. John Childs,
Bob Morey and Gerard Cote kept Heath in sight but settled for
crossing the stripe in that order.
The season-opening, 9-for-10 run by
Heath is officially the most prolific start in Acceleration Series
history, topping Jason Gibbs’ 8-for-11 dominance in the initial
Sport Truck campaign of 2001 and Sally Gherardi’s 7-for-11 mastery
of the inaugural 1999 Ladies season.
