ACCELERATION SERIES
July 20, 2007
Sessions wins first after 6 years
of trying; Rose joins club of fast kids in Rebels
OXFORD, Maine – Six years of persistence paid off Friday night for
Kimberly Sessions.
With the largest Acceleration Series
crowd of the season looking on as part of TD Banknorth 250 Weekend
Presented By New England Dodge Dealers, Sessions sped to her first
career win at Oxford Plains Speedway in the Allen's Coffee Flavored
Brandy Ladies feature.
Sessions wasn't the only first-time
winner on Polly's Variety/D.R. Fournier Night. Calvin Rose Jr., 17, became the third different
rookie to
capture a Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebel main event this summer.
Seven other features thrilled the
fans on a wild night of racing under a crystal-blue sky.
Tom Averill picked up his second
straight win in Chimney Tech Outlaw action. Kevin Lawrence joined
Averill in winning his second 20-lap Outlaw event of the season, and
Mark MacDonald became a three-time winner in the class for full-size
sedans.
Gregg Norton extended his all-time
record for Rebel feature wins with another checkered flag. Kyle
Hewins collected his second four-cylinder victory of the campaign in
the high-point event.
Past division champion Marvin
Hamilton has been a consistent top-five runner in the Call of the Wild RV
Sport Truck division all season, and he delivered his second win of
the summer Friday.
Jamie Heath has enjoyed an easier
time in the upstart Crazy Horse Racing Renegade division. Heath won
for the 10th time in 11 starts.
Last week's second-place run was a
sign of things to come for Sessions, who charged from her eighth
starting position to snag the lead from Laura McKeage on a lap 4
restart.
Sessions nearly lost her spacious
lead while navigating lapped traffic in the late stages. When
Christina Spaulding and Vanna Brackett tangled in the battle for
second, however, it left Sessions more than full straightaway in
front of her remaining competition.
"It feels awesome. Finally, I
got up here. My crew worked hard and did a great job, and I'm here
because of it," Sessions said.
Cathy Manchester was the surprised
second-place finisher after Spaulding and Brackett's run-in, for
which Spaulding was disqualified.
"Was there anybody else left? It
was a great race. The car was running tough, but I think everybody's
was, so we had a good time," Manchester said.
Patty Brannon backed up her win last
week with a third-place effort. Dottie Patria rallied from her
involvement in an early crash to finish fourth ahead of McKeage.
Rose also hinted at his rapid
improvement as a driver by passing the leader a week ago, even
though he was four laps down at the time.
This time around, his authoritative
pass of fellow rookie Nick Seames on lap 2 meant significantly more.
Rose went unchallenged throughout the caution-free sprint, with
Craig Farrington more than three seconds behind in his rear-view
mirror.
Mike Winslow survived a lengthy
battle with Darrell Moore to claim the third spot, while Ken Daigle
Jr. wound up as the third first-year competitor in the top five.
Norton's season of incredible highs
and lows hit another summit with his fourth victory, one behind Mark
Childs Jr. for the division lead.
Gerard Cote set the pace for the
first two laps before Norton dropped the hammer and bolted from
eighth to the lead.
"I haven't started a race in
four races because this car has been a turd," Norton said
flatly. "I've changed most everything on this car, and finally
I got it going tonight. If I didn't get it going tonight, I would
have cut the roof off it and started over."
Martin Krauter made an impressive
charge in the outside lane to claim his second runner-up honor of
the season, while Derek Cook made a brilliant save to stay out of
the backstretch wall after early contact and rallied to third. Cole
Flagg and Nic Stanley followed.
Hewins held Tyson Jordan at bay
following a lap 9 restart that wiped out his extensive early lead.
Jordan hit the curb in his pursuit of the leader and dropped from
Hewins' rear bumper to a safer four-car length distance at the
checkers.
"I was pushing bad at the end of
the race. I'm glad it ended when it did," said Jordan.
"My car was pushing, too, but
once Tyson dropped back a little bit I was able to drift a little
more in the corners and pull away from him," said Hewins, who
notched his second win in his last three starts.
Hamilton saw Lee Spurling whittle his
pickup lead to a few truck lengths in the closing circuits, but time
ran out and traffic fell the 2002 division king's way.
"I got all the breaks
tonight," Hamilton said. "Everything opened for up for me.
The tires started going away at the end. I'm glad it was only 20
laps."
Rene Foster and Rick Hebert collided
on lap 13 after an intense battle for the lead, shuffling Hamilton
into the top spot for keeps.
Spurling left behind a wild,
three-truck bonanza for the third position.
Six-time feature winner Jake Burns
wound up three-quarters of a lap behind the leaders after early
evasive action. He reeled in Yogi Hiscock and Ryan Farrar without
the help of a caution. The time it took Burns to overtake Farrar on
the outside left him with nothing for Hiscock, however, giving Yogi
a trophy one week after he finished a race on his roof.
Lawrence outlasted the field in what
might have been the longest 20-lap race in Acceleration Series
history. Five caution flags and a red flag slowed the field, with
only nine of the 22 starters completing more than 16 laps.
"I don't know how many laps we
actually ran," said Lawrence, "but it felt like more than
50."
The win was Lawrence's second of the season and a satisfying rebound
after mechanical failure sidelined him for a double-feature night
last time out.
Craig Coolidge finished a career-best second, with Don Veinott
notching his first podium finish of the season after Tim Hatch
failed the post-race inspection. David Brown and George Haskell
wound up fourth and fifth in the endurance test. Brown recovered
from a flat tire to do so.
MacDonald held off Belanger in a
bumper-to-bumper drag race across the stripe, with both cars
spinning wildly off the end of the front stretch to punctuate the
scrap.
"That was a rough one,"
MacDonald said. "I've had a couple of rough weeks there, so
this is good."
Gordon Bell outmaneuvered Thom Bell
for third, narrowly in front of Fred Clavet.
Averill remained the hottest driver
in the Outlaw class, backing up last Saturday's win with a second
triumph on the biggest race weekend of the year. He overtook Tina
Titus at the halfway mark.
"It took me three years to get
my second win," said Averill, "and it took six days to get
to my third win."
Steve Moon maintained his hot streak,
as well, in second, while Agren Appliance Grand Slam champion David
Childs out-muscled Richard Spaulding for third. Guy Childs bounced
back from a mid-race pit stop to grab fifth.
Heath had no trouble hitting double
digits in the win column, leading all 10 laps of the Renegade
scramble. John Childs' post-race troubles at the tech shack boosted
Bob Morey to second and Skip Turner to third. Gerard Cote and Ken
Marston completed the top five.
Maine's most prestigious annual short
track weekend continues with the Maine-Ly Action Sports 100 tonight
at 6:30 p.m. It's the first-ever OPS appearance by the True Value
Modified Series.
Qualifying for the TD Banknorth 250
begins at 2 p.m. Sunday. Don't miss your chance to get tickets. The
Speedway box office will open Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Call (207)
