ACCELERATION SERIES
August 1, 2007
Childs' family dominance
continues; Soon-to-be dad Farrar wins first ever
OXFORD, Maine – The Childs family's summer of excellence continued
Wednesday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Guy Childs and nephew David Childs
each captured a 30-lap Chimney Tech Outlaw feature in the
Acceleration Series, bringing their extended family's total of
Wednesday and Saturday night victories this season to 14.
David Childs recently clinched the
four-race Agren Appliance Grand Slam championship in the Saturday
night portion of the Acceleration schedule.
Jim Archer captured the middle Outlaw
chapter, matching Guy Childs with his third victory of the season.
Driving the car that Guy Childs later
took to victory lane, Christina Spaulding got the #00 off to a
flying start with her first triumph of the season in Allen's Coffee
Flavored Brandy Ladies action.
Jamie Heath scored his eighth
straight win and 11th in 12 tries in the first-year Crazy Horse
Racing Engines Renegade class.
In the closest race of the night, one
that rivaled the one-thousandth of a second difference in last
Saturday's Late Model finale, Call of the Wild RV Center Sport Truck
driver Ryan Farrar scored the first victory of his career.
Farrar admitted that he would be
leaving the track as quickly as his truck could pass the post-race
technical inspection, because his fiancee, Alexa, went into labor
with their child Wednesday evening.
His manner of victory provided a
thrilling backdrop to the big day in his life. Farrar stayed in
rookie Opie Allard's tire tracks throughout the second half of the
30-lap event before making his move to the inside on the final
circuit.
When the slower truck of Kevin Oliver
impeded his path, Farrar drifted slightly up the track without
lifting off the accelerator. Rick Hebert bolted to the inside and
made it a three-wide sprint out of the final corner (lapped traffic
not included).
Farrar hit the finish line roughly
the thickness of his paint job in front of Hebert, while Allard
somehow slipped all the way to fourth behind Marvin Hamilton in the
final rundown. Point leader Jake Burns settled for fifth.
Oh, by the way: Ryan and Alexa's son
arrived Thursday morning.
"Finally I got one!"
exclaimed Farrar. "I've got to go to the hospital as soon as I
get out of here. I just want to thank my whole family and especially
my father for helping me out.:
Childs was untouchable after roaring
from the 11th starting position to shake early leader George Haskell
on lap 4 in a battle of former Strictly Stock competitors.
One restart slowed the action on lap
10, for a trail of fluid from the machine of Nick Hanson. Childs
asserted himself on the restart and sailed away from Leo Hatch over
the second half of the event.
"The car was going good. It had
a pretty big push in it, and it was running a little hot,"
Childs said, "but it was going good."
Hatch backed up his early-season win
with a second-place finish, while Craig Coolidge collected his third
consecutive trophy. Gerry Richard matched his best finish of the
season in fourth, with Phil Knowlton accomplishing that same feat by
running fifth. Knowlton was the final car on the lead lap, another
sign of Childs' iron-fisted rule over the Outlaw opener.
Round two was little trouble for
Archer, who coaxed a few laughs from the crowd when he described the
mid-week tinkering that made old, reliable #6 able to take the
green.
"It got kind of banged up the
last couple races," Archer explained. "It looked kind of
funny this week. I had my tractor pulling one side and my truck
pulling the other trying to straighten the front end out. It wasn't
pretty, but I had to do it because the wheels wouldn't go all the
way left anymore after a couple of the hits it's taken. It's kind of
been a season of taking the good with the bad, but I'm glad we
finally got back up here again."
Like Childs, Archer took the lead on
lap 4, motoring past Kimberly Sessions.
Success in traffic and a last-lap
tangle allowed Jim Drake, Tina Titus and John Spencer to charge from
starting spots outside the top 10 to second, third and fourth. Scott
Ellis snagged fifth.
Steve Brill played the rabbit in the
third race, setting the pace through lap 11. That's when David
Childs took command and left the field in his exhaust.
"It helps starting up
front," admitted Childs, whose opening perch on the outside of
the third row was one of his best in a successful season to date.
Rick Spaulding made one of his
customary drives from deep in the field in his orange rocket,
bolting from 17th to second. Keith Landry and Mike Ballard followed.
Steve Moon probably enjoyed the best
fortune of the night. The point leader faded from third to fifth on
the final lap with a tire apparently going flat, but he was saved by
the checkers and cashed in another consistent run.
Driving the car that Guy Childs later
took to victory lane, Christina Spaulding got the #00 off to a
flying start with her first triumph of the season in Allen's Coffee
Flavored Brandy Ladies action.
The caution-free sprint belonged to
Patty Brannon for the first 27 laps, but her lead wavered during
several close encounters with traffic.
Brannon and Deanna Bisbee tangled
while battling for the lead with under three laps remaining.
Brannon's brief off-track excursion vaulted Spaulding to the top
spot, where she remained for her first win since August 2004.
"It's kind of been a rough day.
Everything was going wrong," said Spaulding.
Things have been going right lately
for Kimberly Sessions, who backed up her first career victory on TD
Banknorth 250 weekend with a second-place trophy. Point leader Vanna
Brackett was third, trailed by Bisbee and Cathy Manchester.
Dottie Patria, who entered the night
second in points, departed with a flat right front tire while
running in the top five with five laps to go.
Jamie Heath scored his eighth
straight win and 11th in 12 tries in the first-year Crazy Horse
Racing Engines Renegade class. Once again, he led the entire 10-lap
distance.
John Childs, Skip Turner, Gerard Cote
and Bob Morey rounded out the top five.
OPS revs up again with a doubleheader
weekend. The New Balance Summer Celebration includes five divisions
of racing, a fireworks display and an on-track autograph session.
Qualifying races begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Motor Mayhem,
highlighted by Enduro Twin 100s, hits the track at 1 p.m. Sunday.
