Hebert, Stanley steam to Rebel
wins before thunder rolls on Sun Journal Night
OXFORD, Maine - Oxford Plains Speedway race fans were treated to a
fireworks display for the second straight Saturday night. This one
wasn't the kind of entertainment any short track enthusiast wanted,
however.
Severe thunderstorms ripped through
Maine shortly before sunset, wiping out all three Oxford
Championship Series features after a full round of qualifying on Sun
Journal Night.
The Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebels
of the Acceleration Series did manage to beat the elements and
complete their twin 20-lap features as part of the Agren Appliance
Grand Slam.
Jeff Hebert ran away from Scott
Farrington and Cole Flagg to capture the first feature. Race two
produced a thrilling finish between five of the division's hungry
young lions, with Nic Stanley scoring his second victory of the
season in front of a four-wide scramble for second.
OPS owner Bill Ryan announced that
the Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Strictly Stock division will run
double features next Saturday, June 9, in support of the L/A
Harley-Davidson Late Model Challenge 100. The Oxford Networks Late
Model will wage two 40-lap features on Saturday, June 16, and the
Sun Journal 100 will be made up in addition to the regularly
scheduled Allen's Mini Stock 30-lap race on Saturday, June 23.
Lineups for the makeup races are
locked in and listed below. Any driver who did not appear at the
track Saturday night will not be allowed to compete in those events.
They will be permitted to compete in the division's regularly
scheduled race that night, however.
Because eight races were completed,
including two of the five features, it is considered an official
race program. Tickets and pit bracelets are not renewable for a
future event.
The two Runnin’ Rebel sprints were
a study in contrast.
Hebert needed only three laps to
steer the Hebert’s Auto Service/Real Deal Auto Sales #85 from
sixth starting position to the lead in the outside lane.
One caution flag slowed the
proceedings at halfway, when rookies Monica Martin and Don White
tangled in turn four. Hebert had no problems on the ensuing restart,
though, and pulled away from runner-up Scott Farrington by eight car
lengths at the finish.
“We’ve got it dialed in, and
it’s going good now,” said Hebert, whose fourth career win was
his first since September 2005. “It’s going to be a fun
season.”
In his first start since claiming his
initial career win on May 23, Cole Flagg led the first two laps and
finished a strong third. Kevin Noyes charged from 11th to fourth,
while Brady Romano bagged his best result of the young season in
fifth.
Those top finishers were a world
apart compared to the nightcap, in which the top five (their average
age about 18) crossed the finish line within about 15 feet of each
other.
Stanley, who made his OPS debut only
last July and has roughly a dozen races of experience, officially
led the entire race to lock up his third career triumph. But he
spent the entire second half of the race with Tyson Jordan virtually
glued to his rear bumper and Josh Childs, Kyle Hewins and Mark
Childs Jr. all making multiple overtures in the outside lane.
With the humid conditions and the
impending rain creating tough sledding in the high groove, Stanley
had enough steam to hold the chasers at bay. “I have to thank
Stanley Excavation and Shanley Development.
They’re my father’s companies,
and they’ve helped me out big time,” Stanley said. “We built
this car, and we’re really happy with it.”
Jordan and Josh Childs reached the
finish line first in a furious drag race out of the final corner.
Hewins edged Mark Childs Jr. for the fourth spot.
In preliminary Champ Series action,
Wal-Mart Rookie of the Year candidates Travis Stearns and Tommy
Ricker maintained their impressive pace with 10-lap Oxford Networks
Late Model heat wins. Mark Bowie and Scott Belskis led the Strictly
Stock qualifiers, with Bob Guptill and Rich Sirois showing the way
in the Mini Stock heats.
