Regarding the incident in Victory Lane
at the conclusion of the Oxford 250

The #54 car of Johnny Clark and the #53 of Cole Butcher had contact during close racing during the event.  At the end of the event the #54 was in the low groove and came up on a slower car that was at the tail end of the lead lap.  The #54 braked and slowed abruptly and the #53 had no place to go and ran into the #54. The #54 spun at this point. The #53 went on to win the event.

After the checkered flag, while the track was under caution, the #54 ran into the #53 in Victory Lane and revved his car excessively.  At this time there were officials, crew members of the Top 3 and media headed to Victory Lane.  This was an incident that could have gone very bad, very fast, and not something to be taken lightly.

The #54 of Clark has been docked 100 points and will have a fine of $3,000.   Disqualification had been seriously considered but we felt this was a suitable punishment.

We understand the frustrations of racing, especially in big events, but the safety of everyone is our top priority and this type of behavior cannot be accepted.

Butcher Claims 49th Annual Oxford 250

Cole Butcher had never considered Oxford Plains Speedway to be one of his better tracks, but after years of trying in the Spring of 2022 Cole picked up his first career PASS win at Oxford. That momentum at the 3/8 mile built a little confidence. Butcher qualified 20th on the field after finishing in the last transfer spot in the 5th heat and would never again fall back further than that spot.

As always some of the most exciting racing of Oxford 250 Sunday was the qualifying races. With 65 cars battling for just 42 spots 18 drivers would be sent home disappointed having to wait a full year for their 250 dreams to become a reality. Five drivers didn't have to worry about that, as Curtis Gerry, Joe Pastore, Joey Doiron, Ben Rowe and Cassius Clark all won their heat races and would start in the first five spots respectively.

A few drivers that didn't fair as well in their heat races were Garrett Hall and TJ Brackett. In heat race number five, contact early on sent both Hall and Bracket into the front stretch wall. Hall was able to repair his car. However TJ's number 61 would need a rear clip and done for the day.

The carnage would not end there. In the second of three consolation races four cars made contact causing 2006 250 Champion Jeremie Whorff's #00 to climb the right side of Dave Farrington Jr's #23. Whorff would also be forced to withdraw his name from competition while Farrington was able to repair his car and start with a provisional.

Garrett Hall was able to rebound and win the last chance race with his broken and beaten warhorse, while 250 favorites Mike Hopkins, Nick Sweet and Tracy Gordon were unable to make the race. Other drivers on the outside looking in were 2001 250 Champion Gary Drew and 3-time 250 Champion Travis Benjamin.

After the field was set, the fly over was completed, and engines were fired. Curtis Gerry and Joe Pastore lead the stacked 42 car field to green. Pastore was the dominate force at the start leading the first 51 laps, fending off Gerry and others for multiple restarts.

Many drivers had issues early including Gabe Brown involved in a lap 2 spin and Eddie MacDonald who suffered a flat right front tire. Both drivers were put a lap down but were able to rally back win lucky dogs and still be in contention for the win in the end.

Eventually Curtis Gerry was able to overtake Pastore on lap 52 from the outside. However, on lap 54 Gerry tried to clear himself to the bottom, and the #20p car of Pastore was not about to give him a break. Gerry spun out of the lead in front of the field.

Pastore was able to lead from lap 54 to lap 80 including the Hall of Fame Lap on lap 60 honoring 2022 Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Dick Glines. Pastore was able to claim $7,800.00 in in lap money before running out of fuel on lap 177.

The next driver to take the lead was Max Cookson, out front for the next 48 laps. This was Max's first attempt at the Oxford 250, and he had a stellar day. Most drivers just hope to make the show in their first start, but Max was a contender throughout. The Pittsfield driver is a Rookie in the RB Performance Super Late Models weekly division at Oxford. He is leading the championship standings after not even strapping into a racecar until the fall of 2020. An impressive talent that we will be watching winning races at some level for years to come.

Eddie Macdonald in the #17ma would eventually inherit the lead picking up 21 laps lead as well before Calvin Rose took over to lead 4 laps.

However, 2020 Champion Johnny Clark #54 looked destined for victory taking the lead on lap 156 and leading all the way to lap 241. On lap 242 Clark encountered Jimmy Hebert another driver making his first 250 start. Hebert was going to hold the bottom grove to maintain his spot in the running order. With the Canadian Cole Butcher running Clark down, Clark ran into the back of the lap car mistiming the pass. Cole Butcher then got into the back of Clark, spinning the #54 around backwards and out of the lead. Clark was able to refire the car and recover to fourth and restart with the leaders.

This also gave "The Outlaw" Eddie MacDonald another shot to pick up his third 250 win. Restacking the field with just 8 laps to go, Eddie was unable to make it work. Gabe Brown  #50b of Center Conway, NH also made a late race charge on the #53 of leader Butcher to no avail.

In the end Cole Butcher took home the victory by 0.447 seconds over Eddie MacDonald and Gabe Brown. Johnny Clark, Max Cookson, Joey Doiron, Curtis Gerry, DJ Shaw, Ryan Kuhn, and Alan Tardiff rounded out the top 10. Nine drivers that finished in the top 10 have won races at Oxford this season, proving practice does in fact make perfect.

Cole Butcher joined the likes of Don Biederman, Junior Hanley, Derek Lynch and Dave Whitlock as Canadians that have won the Oxford 250. He is the first Canadian to win since Dave Whitlock in 1995 and the first driver hailing from Nova Scotia to win the prestigious race.

The 49th Annual 250 was the biggest event in several years and the 50th will be even bigger. Will a Clark pick up another win? Will the Hound Dog Jeff Taylor get it done? Maybe a relatively new face like Max Cookson or an outsider traveling from across the continent to try and capture the largest single day short track purse in the country? Only time will tell, but the 50th Annual Oxford 250 will be bigger and better than ever.

The New England Super Modified Series also graced Oxford Plains Speedway with their presence where Derek Griffith piloted the Allegresso Airlines/ All Star Towing #77 owned by Ken White Sr. to Victory. Derek had never raced a big block supermodified in his life. The #77 sustained significant damage in the first practice after an incident with a push truck that required a tow back to the pits. The team worked hard got the car repaired, and although the practice laps were limited, Derek won both the heat and the feature going wire to wire in both events. Ben Sietz, Russ Wood, Rob Summers and Dan Bowes would round out the top five.

The PASS MODS were in action both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday it was all Colby Benjamin in the #52 Zampell Facilities Management car. Colby took the lead on lap 7 out of 40 and never looked back even as PASS MODS point leader Garrett Lamb was on a charge, coming through the field three wide and moving into second.  Bill Fiske was backing up his 2nd place finish at Oxford 2 weeks prior with another solid podium effort. This would be Colby's first win on the MODS tour after four years of trying. Garret Lamb increased his point lead over Brandon Varney, Shawn Knight, Dan Brown and Troy Morse with his podium finish. Bill Fiske ended up third while Gary Chiasson, and Ajay Cates rounded out the top 5.

On Sunday all-time PASS MODS win leader Andy Shaw put on a clinic going wire to wire to win his first PASS MODS race in half a decade. Win #31 on his PASS Mod career was short lived though as Shaw was disqualified in tech. Dan Brown inherited his second PASS MODS win of his career while Garret Lamb finished second yet again. Ryan Ripley, Brandon Varney, and Alex Ricker filled out the top five spots in the 50-lap contest.

The PASS MODS will have Labor Day weekend off before they join the Super Late Models in a trip to The Feed The County 150 at Spud Speedway on their first trip to potato country since 2019.

We would like to thank all the businesses, groups, and individuals that purchased laps for the 49th Annual Oxford 250! For the first time in recent memory your generosity has filled each and every lap!

As a reminder, every cent of this money is given directly to the leader of that lap. Historically lap leader money has played a pivotal role in determining the winner at the end of the night. Will that be the case in 2022? Time will tell! The drivers and teams, PASS, and OPS thank your contribution in making this already historic event even better!

If you did not get your order in to us on time and missed getting your lap, fear not, other great opportunities exist for you to become a part of one of the largest and most famous short track races in America.  For more information about that please call Kevin at 207-577-1836 or email at opsmarketing@yahoo.com or call Tom Mayberry.
